Call For Papers: "Raising Native Voices: Power Shifts and Politics reflected in dress traditions"

Western Region 2023 Symposium, Costume Society of America

September 15th, 16th, and 17th, 2023
Held at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming

We are pleased to announce that the Western Region’s 2023 Symposium will be in Cody Wyoming, at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and influenced by their recent exhibit “Protect Our Indigenous Sisters”. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) project uses the color red for its deep cultural meaning. Rather than being a color of violence it is believed by some Native cultures that red is a color that the spirits can see here on earth. By using this 1890s red dress from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, the curators hoped to build a bridge from the past to contemporary movements, that their “collections aren’t just based in the past, but they have significance for the future”.
